Over the past several years, there has been a rise in mass timber construction around the world, demonstrating the strength, durability, and design flexibility of next-generation lumber technologies.

The following project images showcase recent mass timber buildings in North America, and how products like cross-laminated timber (CLT) are enabling designers to push beyond wood’s perceived boundaries, achieving building heights and spans that would have once required concrete, steel or masonry for structural support.

Constructed in 1908 as a warehouse for the Butler Brothers Company, Butler Square is a nine-story 500,000-square-foot building in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Heavy timber post and beam construction was used to meet the warehouse’s 300-pound-per-squarefoot loading requirement and is a demonstration of mass timber’s inherent durability. *Image Courtesy of the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota*

Bellevue First Congregational Church A shining example of adaptive reuse in wood, the Bellevue First Congregational Church transformed a cold, lackluster 1970’s office building that occupied the space before it into a place of light, sound and beauty for its community in Bellevue, Washington. The 49,000-square-foot sanctuary designed by atelierjones features cross-laminated-timber (CLT) panels, inserted as an irregular, folded plate structure that exhibits both greater structural stability and a rich interplay of light, shadow and texture. Fire Station 76 Designed by Hennebery Eddy Architects, Fire Station 76 is not only distinguished by exposed 27-foot tall glulam Tudor-style arches in the expansive apparatus bay, but also by a shou sugi ban-treated barn wood cladding as part of the living quarter’s rain screen system. To comply with code, the design team made a provision for increased load requirements expected of an essential facility to help ensure uninterrupted operation following a major seismic or weather event. Tallwood House at Brock Commons The University of British Columbia’s new student residence has a concrete podium and two concrete cores, with 17 stories of cross-laminated timber (CLT) floors supported by glulam columns. With amazing speed and efficiency, the structure and façade of the building were completed less than 70 days after the prefabricated components were first delivered to the site – four months ahead of schedule. UMass Design Building Intended as a showcase example of integrated design that is expressive of today’s state-of-the-art wood construction technologies, the new four-story Design Building at the University of Massachusetts Amherst exemplifies the university’s commitment to sustainable and innovative design. Designed by Leers Weinzapfel Associates, the 87,200-square-foot building features an exposed glulam timber post and beam structural system with cross- laminated timber (CLT) shear wall cores and roof decking. Most of us know Chuck Leavell from what he calls his “night job,” as the longtime keyboardist for the Rolling Stones.

But Leavell has another gig, and he attacks it with equal fervor: forestry.

Whether managing his 3,000-acre pine and oak plantation in southern Georgia or touring the country preaching the need for widespread forest restoration, Leavell is a passionate advocate for the use and perpetuation of America’s forests.

Now he’s taking that advocacy another step with the production of a documentary television series, “America’s Forests with Chuck Leavell,” which aired its premiere episode earlier this month on Oregon Public Broadcasting and at the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland.
